On December 17, 2007, the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (P&SSAct) was signed into law. This important child safety law became effective in December 2008 and is designed to prevent the tragic and hidden hazard of drain entrapment’s and evisceration’s in pools and spas. Under the law, all public pools and spas must have ASME/ANSI A112.19.8-2007 compliant drain covers installed and a second anti-entrapment system installed, when there is a single main drain other than an unblock-able drain.
Completed Dual Drain Conversion
Austech Pools has been doing single to dual main drain safety conversions since law was effectively passed. We utilize this method because single main drains have a higher risk of creating entrapment problems than properly designed multiple drain facilities.
Main drains must be a minimum of 36 inches apart to avoid entrapment issues. Safety for your swimming should not be overlooked. Each year, nearly 300 children under the age of five drown in residential and public pools. Few people know the hidden dangers from drain or suction entrapment. Drains with broken, missing, or faulty covers can entrap hair, the body, limbs, jewelry, clothes, and can cause evisceration.
